She told my wife Valorie on the phone the other day that during her one month stay, she saw the sun for 4 half days only, and the rest of the time the sun looked orange as it was filtering through fog and mega pollution. Valorie and I were completely able to relate to this as we had a big forest fire a large number of miles away over the border in Arizona that sent smoke in our direction and we saw a smoky orange sun for several days. At our elevation we normally have the clearest skies you could possibly imagine, to the point that our area is designated one of the 7 "dark" areas on the planet where ALL potentially visible stars can be seen most nights. Valorie and I feel that you will enjoy reading her observations below.
Our decision has been and remains – DON’T BUY ANY FOOD FROM CHINA ORGANIC OR OTHERWISE.

My observations of Beijing, China
Air:
I spent one month (October 2011) in Beijing. During that time I saw the sunlight only 4 times.
It was explained to me that the fall is a rather foggy time of year in Beijing but that if the fog smells and looks yellow it is smog. I called it smog-fog because the air never smelled good even if the sky was clear and I nearly always saw the yellow tint. When it was clear it did not last long, maybe half a day and the air hurt your nostrils and gave me headaches. I never wanted to take a deep breath of air there, it simply hurt too much. There was always this odor in the air that I have never smelled anywhere else in the world, it didn’t smell good.
Water:
Before arriving I was briefed on the water situation. I was told that you cannot drink the water in China at all unless you boil it. When I arrived in the apartment, there was this foul odor that I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from, it was coming out of the sinks and drains, I had to cover them up to reduce the odor. Some days it was worse than others. I also noticed that the water smelled, some days worse than others… it was a very foul smell too. Many of the residents complained about that smell but nothing could be done about it because that is just how it is everywhere in China. So I just drank bottled water, there was no option of buying distilled water anywhere that I could find.
Sometimes I would walk by as people were watering plants and could smell the water, it had the same bad smell. In restaurants it is common to ask for hot water, which is boiled sink water.
Food:
I personally found the food to taste delicious, I liked the cuisine a lot. Although during my entire time there my stomach never quite felt great. I made sure to take Doc Shillington's Intestinal Cleanse and Intestinal Detox everyday. But even then there were days when my stomach just didn’t feel normal.
I was told by some locals that people who live in Beijing know not to eat out often for several reasons:
-MSG
-Bad oil, it is commonly believed that very cheap restaurants buy used oil from other restaurants and reuse it. (I believe it!)
-no regulations on hygiene of the kitchen
-bad or cheap meat used
1 out of 3 people that I met had some horrible digestive experience and had to go to the hospital, and be put on antibiotics. While others just had to stop eating Chinese food altogether within a few weeks of arriving.
When I spoke to ex-pats who live in Beijing they also commented on the fact that after a year of eating out, they no longer could handle eating Chinese food at all. Not to mention all seemed to suffer from digestive problems.
Near where I lived was a morning market. When I first went there, I was shocked!!! The food looked outrageously huge!! I am convinced it was all GMO and if not GMO then heavily sprayed. I was told by many people to never eat the skin of anything in China and to soak all fruit and vegetables in water for 15 min before eating. (this was extremely difficult to adapt to)
I did hear about some organic farms on the outskirts of Beijing that did not spray their crops. But Beijing is a very dry place and dirt blows around freely, not to mention the water they use is terrible. And farms are very close to one another, if one is organic amongst 5 that are not that are only divided by a wire fence it is hard to imagine that no contamination occurs.
For me China was a life changing experience. It is a land of extremes. There were some things that just don’t make sense to me at all. They have a long way to go in regards to their view on Food, Air and Water.
